Bayrakli Park Closing

Bayrakli Park is closing effective December 2009!

Bayrakli Park was an area of land leased by the U.S. Government in Izmir, Turkey and was primarily used for recreational purposes. It contained an 8 lane 25 yard swimming pool used for summer activities, scuba lessons and the Tranca Recreational Swim Team. Bayrakli Park had a football/soccer field known as "Hank Winter Field", a Softball Field, a Basketball Gymnasium with Raquetball Courts, Equipment Rentals and of course a Snack Bar. A Self Help Auto shop, Woodshop and the Izmir Sub Aqua Club was also located at Bayrakli Park.

Izmir American High School in Izmir Turkey was part of the Department of Defense Dependent School (DODDS) system and existed for almost 50 years; from 1953 until it officially closed in 2002. Most of the students of this school were the sons and daughters of U.S. service members on assignment to Izmir. Some of the students were from other NATO countries such as England, Germany, Holland and Italy. The assignment to Izmir was unique because there was no military base here. U.S. and NATO facilities, offices, recreation centers, and schools were in the heart of the Turkish Community. This unique opportunity of living closer to the hospitality of the Turkish people made for a fantastic opportunity to learn the local culture, taste the foods, learn the customs, see the history and love the country.

A former student once said "These were the times of our lives." This web site is dedicated to everyone that was affiliated with the Izmir American High School
